Abandoned Vehicle Ordinance
The Housing Codes Department is responsible for the enforcement of codes and ordinances for the City of Jackson. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Jackson by addressing and eliminating housing and blight issues by:
- Enforcement of Property Maintenance Codes for the abatement and preserving of existing structures.
- Enforcement of ordinances to promote compliance of vehicle, litter, overgrowth and nuisance issues.
- Working with other departments to ensure the safety, health and welfare of the City is preserved.

There has been a problem with homeowners obtaining their own permits under the premise of doing their own electrical, plumbing, gas and/or mechanical work and then contracting with unlicensed persons to perform said work. Such an arrangement is a violation of the licensing laws of the City of Jackson. In an effort to ensure that the homeowner understands the applicable laws, and to have a statement on file indicating the homeowner is to do the work, any homeowner applying for a homeowner's permit, which would otherwise require a license, must submit a notarized affidavit, a blank copy of which may be obtained at our office.

Violations of the City of Jackson Health Codes are related to exterior unsanitary conditions related to property, maintenance of vacant lots and the improper handling of refuse. This includes debris on private property, unkempt lawns and lots and unauthorized accumulations of garbage or refuse.
BUILDING & HOUSING CODES DEPARTMENT
The enforcement plan is as follows:
- The property owner is contacted by telephone or in person if possible to explain the existing health codes violation.
- A letter is then sent notifying the property owner, allowing five days for compliance.
- If compliance is not achieved within a reasonable time frame, necessary legal action will be taken as a last resort.
- The City Court Judge may assess fines as high as $50.00 per day court cost and require the responsible party to comply with the Property Maintenance Codes.
- Following proper notification, the city may make necessary arrangements for clean up and assess the cost to the property owner.
