The deadline to submit Application Packet is two weeks prior to chosen test date.
P.O.S.T. Certified Officers do not have to take a written exam.
Civilian Applicants that possess an Associates Degree or higher do not have to take a written exam.
The following documents are required to begin the application process:
High School Diploma or GED, Degree if applicable, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, Drivers License and DD214 if applicable. A picture of the applicant from the waist up.

Our internship program is designed not only to help students with their degree requirements, but also to potentially recruit candidates for a career with the Jackson Police Department.
MISSION
It is the mission of the Jackson Police Department (JPD) Internship program to offer college students, who are interested in a possible career in law enforcement, an enlightening rewarding, and educational experience.
OBJECTIVE
The Student Intern Program is to provide a positive learning environment, in which interested college students can experience the various aspects and responsibilities of law enforcement, receiving college credits upon completion of the program (if applicable).
OVERVIEW
Our internship offers students an opportunity to observe and work in various units of the police department such as Records Division, Property and Evidence Unit, Crime Reduction Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Patrol Ride Along Program, etc. Interns will at no time during the program have arrest authority or carry any type weapon. Students will learn about the department's staffing, mission, activities, records, and services. Internships are composed of both observations and administrative work. Students are not required to major in Criminal Justice.
QUALIFICATIONS
The intern selection process will be competitive due to the limited number of positions available. A qualifying student must be considered a full-time student at a nationally accredited college or university and the following:
- 18 years of age
- Must receive college credits for the internship (or at least approved by the administration of the college or university as part of a structured educational endeavor).
- Have not been convicted of, or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendre to, any felony charge or to any violations of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances.
- Honorable discharge from Military Service, if applicable (copy of DD 214 required)
- Authorization for release of Personal Information (notarized)

Starting October 1, 2022, Extra Duty Solutions (EDS) will be handling the administration of the extra duty details worked by the Jackson Police Department.
To request an extra duty detail and/or continue services, please complete the online request form using the link below. If the detail is recurring or is multiple days, please document that information in the comments section. An EDS Account Manager will contact you for clarification if needed.

EDS will handle all invoicing. Payment information will accompany all invoices.
Rates are inclusive of all fees: Officer Rate - $43.33
There is a two (2) hour minimum for each Officer scheduled. Please provide at least a twenty four (24) hours notice when canceling or each Officer scheduled will be paid for two (2) hours. Two (2) hour notice is permitted for events that are dependent on the weather.
A minimum of two (2) Officers are required if alcohol is present.
A Supervisor is required if five (5) or more Officers are requested for large events.
Extra duty details are filled on a voluntary basis and the potential for unfilled requests exist.
