Commercial Garbage Disposal
Dumpster Service is provided by Waste Management to businesses generating large amounts of garbage. Rates are set according to the size of the container and the amount of service required. These charges are invoiced by the City of Jackson Health & Sanitation Dept.

Residential and Small Commercial Business Garbage
The City Ordinance sets the garbage disposal rates for residential and small businesses. These charges for this service are included on the utility monthly bills from Jackson Energy Authority.
Waste Management is the solid waste collection contractor for the City of Jackson. To receive notifications for holiday delays, weather delays, or scheduled changes from Waste Management, email your address to WMJACKSON@WM.COM to receive instructions.

GUIDELINES
RESIDENTIAL and SMALL COMMERCIAL BUSINESS GARBAGE
- Waste must be placed inside the contractor provided poly cart with lid closed.
- Weight limit for poly cart is 175 pounds.
- Carts must be placed at the curb on scheduled service days no later than 7:00 am.
- If you are qualified for hardship/disability services, the cart must be placed in front of the property, visible from the serviced street; and must not be placed in or on porches, patios, decks, garages, carports, or under any awning type structure. (Excludes small commercial business services)
HAND PILE (For residential only)
- Hand pile is a residential pile of yard waste or other residential waste that does not exceed 3' x 5' x 3' in size or a maximum of 10 bags, which the resident must place curbside for collection.
- A hand pile may not contain any bulk waste, construction debris, or unacceptable waste.
- These piles are picked up by Waste Management on garbage service days.
- The cart must be at the curb with the hand pile for disposal. Items must be placed at the curb, three (3) feet from the cart and not in the street or ditches.
BULK WASTE (For residential only)
- All bulk waste must be scheduled.
- Residential bulk yard waste must not consist of limbs or trunks that are longer that eight (8) feet or more than twelve (12) inches in diameter.
- No pile shall exceed 5 ft H x 8 ft L x 5 ft W
- Most appliances can be picked up; any appliance containing Freon must have documentation on the item from a certified service repairman that says the substance was removed.
- DO NOT place bulk waste near any personal property (ex. mailbox, fence, etc.), under low utility lines, in the street or drainage ditches, at fire plugs, next to a utility pole or support cables, or in any area that would impede the vision of pedestrians or motorists.
- Vehicles parked on the street can block access to piles and prevent pickup. Be sure your pile is accessible.
NON-COLLECTIBLE ITEMS
- Any waste generated by contractors or other such persons performing work on the residential unit's property for profit or personal gain and construction debris will NOT be collected (These shall include, but not limited to tree trimmers, general construction, landscape or yard maintenance, carpet installation personnel). Residents should be educated about this policy in order to protect themselves from contractor scams.
- No waste building materials resulting from construction, remodeling, repair, or demolition operations that are directly or indirectly the by-products of construction work or that result from demolition of buildings or other materials. These shall include, but not limited to lumber, shingles, cabinets, plumbing fixtures, toilets, tile, sheetrock, bricks, concrete, dirt, asphalt, sand, gravel, tires or other similar items typical of home repair, renovation, demolition, excavation, or remodel will not be picked up.
- No liquids or flammable or hazardous waste will be picked up. Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events are sponsored yearly for disposal of items of this nature.

New Rolling Carts FAQs
Can I use my own trash can?
- No. The Waste Management trucks are equipped to pick up the rolling cart with an extension arm and the trucks are not compatible with other trash cans.
When will I receive a cart?
- Carts will be delivered by Waste Management in July of 2021.
Can I get two rolling carts?
- The first rolling cart will be provided free of charge by the city. If you need an additional cart, you can email h&s@jacksontn.gov or call 731.425.8545. Fees will apply. The rolling cart issued is 90-96 gallons and much larger than what most households are currently using. We do anticipate most households to only need one cart.
What do I do with large cardboard boxes that do not fit in the rolling cart?
- Boxes may be broke down and placed inside the cart as long as the lid is closed.
- If the broken down box is too large, place it 3 ft away from the cart at the curb.
- Another option is to recycle the cardboard boxes at any of the three (3) convenient centers located within city limits.
What is a hand pile?
- A hand pile is a residential pile of yard waste or other residential waste that does not exceed 3 feet high by 5 feet long by 3 feet wide or a maximum of 10 trash bags weighing less than 50 lbs.
What do I do if my trash will not fit?
- Excessive garbage will be picked on the next service date when it can be put inside the container or qualifies for a hand pile.
Do I have to bring my trash to the curb?
- Yes, unless you have filled out a hardship application and have been approved by the City of Jackson.
How do I apply for assistance?
- Residents with a temporary or permanent hardship or disability can apply for assistance here to continue to receive service at the front of the house. Carts must not be placed in or on porches, patios, decks, garages, carports, or under any awning type structure. You may upload your completed application by clicking here.
What can I do with my old rolling cart?
- If you want to dispose of your old rolling cart, put a sign on it letting the operators know and put it on the curb.
Who should I contact for solid waste collection?
For questions concerning Waste Management, including "What is my schedule for regular household waste pickup?"
All garbage issues or service requests should be reported to the City of Jackson Health & Sanitation Department at 731-425-8545 or H&S@jacksontn.gov or by reporting through the Ready 311 App. Residents receive two pickups a week on Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday. Carts must be placed at the curb no later than 7:00 am on scheduled days, as times of services can vary on routes. Collection schedules may vary because of holidays or weather. Your fee for garbage pickup is included on your monthly Jackson Energy Authority bill.
What is the schedule for residential bulky waste pickup?
Bulk waste & bulk yard waste must be scheduled as of January 1, 2023.
Does the City of Jackson have a recycling program?
Yes, the Jackson Recycling Center is located at 74 B Conalco Dr. Cardboard, paper products, aluminum/steel cans, and plastics #1 & #2 are the items being accepted at this time. Opening Soon!
We are not able to offer curbside recycling at this time due to the expenses that taxpayers will incur. We are actively looking for affordable options.
Will you take my leaves?
Loose leaf pickup service is offered to City of Jackson residents through the Groundskeeping Department from November until March. View maps and guidelines here. All loose leaves, grass clippings, pine needles, etc. must be bagged for bulk yard waste services after the season ends with Groundskeeping.
Is there anything you will not pick up?
Any waste generated by a contractor will NOT be collected (e.g. tree trimmers, lawn/landscaping services, general construction, and carpet installation personnel). Contractors must haul the waste to the landfill.
Residents should be educated about this policy in order to protect themselves from contractor scams.

Can I burn yard waste?
It is unlawful to burn trash, leaves, and other refuse outdoors within the city limits of Jackson. To report illegal burning contact Jackson Fire Department.
Do I need to submit a ticket or call for bulky waste pickup?
Yes, eligible residential customers must schedule for services. This service excludes commercial property.
